| Local company
donates socks to soldiers serving in Iraq Published Monday,
July 12, 2004 by Brenna Fisher Some
people use bumper stickers. Others fly the American flag at their homes or on
their cars. Then there are those who donate their time, energy or even items to
support the American troops fighting the war in Iraq. One local company, Jox
Sox, a fast-growing foot apparel manufacturer, is showing its support by donating
some of its products to one U.S. Marine Corp. platoon. Co-founder of Jox Sox,
Peter Antonacci, said its the little things that can mean a lot to the troops
overseas. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Sarah Teske of Boca Raton is being deployed
to Iraq. She and those like her are putting their lives on the line at one point
or another, Antonacci said. Donating socks is nothing compared to that,
he said. Teske said that although she is honored to be serving her country,
leaving her family is difficult. Her recent marriage in May made her departure
even more difficult. I should be on my honeymoon period, not shipping
out to Iraq, she said. Jox Sox president Harris Pollock said any company
in the position to donate something to the cause should. Though Jox Sox cannot
afford to give socks to every marine, they did manage to outfit 15 of them with
a dozen pairs each. Charity begins at home and these troops are at home,
he said. When he and his partner found out about local Sgt. Teske, they decided
it would be a good idea to help out a neighbor and her platoon. I think
it is very encouraging and comforting to know that there are those businesses
out there who support the military and our mission to maintain the freedom of
our country, Teske said. These Marines will be sporting the Ultimate
Performance Sock, which is specially made for rigorous athletic wear with
extra padded bottoms to reduce fatigue and airflow to keep feet dry. Teske said
she runs in the socks all the time and is glad to have them. Antonacci said
that regardless of how people feel about the war on terror personally, they should
support the troops out there. Showing a little support is not a lot of effort
on the part of civilians, but what soldiers do in the field is a great deal of
effort, Antonacci said. I think it is a team effort to build and maintain
our freedom, and there are too many people out there who take our freedom for
granted, Teske said.
